Our journey began in January of 2020. Eliza Cate had been mostly healthy and led a normal childhood. Then, after the new year we thought that her extreme fatigue was due to the busy holiday season and her pelvic pain and loss of mobility was due to a recent slip and fall but we had that intuition that something was wrong. However, nothing could prepare us for the news we received. After a quick trip to the pediatrician, we were sent directly to the emergency department at MUSC. Bloodwork, numerous tests, and a bone marrow biopsy procedure confirmed what the doctors thought. We heard the words “your child has cancer”.
Eliza Cate was only three years old. The day after her diagnosis she started her very rigorous two and a half years of treatment that were carefully mapped out with intricate combinations of oral medications, IV chemotherapy, lumbar punctures and a great deal of time spent in the hospital. We are so proud of how she handled all that she had to endure. We are very happy to say that she is in remission and doing well. Our next milestone will be achieving a diagnosis of cured after five years of remission. We pray that she will not just survive but that she will completely thrive in all that she takes on in life!
